Ontarians have seen their property taxes increase at above inflation rates for years while their incomes have risen at or below the inflation rate. After tax incomes are being eroded away. This is simply not sustainable.
Look at the chart below for Cambridge taxes, which have risen on average at about twice the inflation rate since 2014. When regional tax increases are added (not shown below), the total tax bill increase for the period exceeds inflation significantly.
The growing percentage of homeowners in arrears (rising to 13.51% in 2024) are struggling to make property tax payments and put food on the table. Property tax Affordability is becoming a major issue in Ontario.

Ontarians can no longer afford the ever-rising cost of Municipal governments. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing needs to demand that our municipalities put plans in place to get per-household annual cost increases back down in line with the growth in homeowner incomes (using inflation as a proxy for income).
